Williams Family Hotel History

I am Peter Williams the owner of San Remo Hotel-Motel.  On behalf of the Williams family and our Partner/Managers Ben and Elyse Fisher, I would like to welcome you to our hotel.

There have been 3 generations of the Williams family in the hotel since my grandfather Tom bought it in 1941.  Six family members have held the licence during this time, including my father Lyle – hence the hotel’s affectionate nickname “Lyles”.  My wife Colleen and I have run the hotel for the past 22 years, continuing the 80 year family tradition and anticipating many more years to come.

A day’s takings in the early days was around 2 shillings and 6 (about 25 cents nowadays), which was mostly “on the slate” according to Tom.  If you wanted to bet on the races you had to go and see the ‘SP’ Bookie who used to sit under the large Norfolk pine tree which is still standing across the road today.

Over the years the town has grown considerably and the hotel with it.  Wander around the hotel and have a look at the pictures on the walls to see just how much it has changed!  During the time the family has served 3 Prime Ministers, Dukes, Premiers, world champion sports people, a great bunch of locals and some very interesting tourists.  We have endured fires, black outs, bar fights, global pandemics and mad chefs!  The famous “Skyhooks” got together here and the town’s biggest annual event “The Channel Challenge” originated over a few beers at this bar.

Hope you enjoy your stay and create your own fond memories.

Cheers,

Peter Williams
